EU AI Act basics
When does the EU AI Act come into force? ▾
The EU AI Act becomes fully applicable on 2 August 2026 for most high-risk AI systems. Article 6(1) classification rules extend to 2 August 2027.
What are the penalties for non-compliance? ▾
Under Article 99: up to €35M or 7% of global turnover for prohibited practices, €15M or 3% for high-risk non-compliance, €7.5M or 1.5% for providing incorrect information to authorities.
Which AI systems are classified as high-risk? ▾
Annex III lists high-risk systems including AI used in recruitment/hiring (§4a), credit scoring and financial decisions (§5b), employee performance monitoring (§4b), biometric identification, critical infrastructure, and public service eligibility decisions, among others.
Does the EU AI Act apply to companies outside the EU? ▾
Yes. The Act has extraterritorial reach similar to GDPR. Any company whose AI systems produce outputs that reach EU residents must comply, regardless of where the company is based.
Is this legal advice? ▾
No. Governancer provides informational risk assessments only. It is NOT legal advice. Compliance decisions should be made in consultation with qualified legal counsel. We are not liable for compliance outcomes based on our assessments.
Using Governancer
How accurate is the 6-question risk assessment? ▾
The assessment is a first-pass triage. It identifies likely high-risk Annex III use cases and missing documentation. A full conformity assessment (Article 43) still requires lawyer review and documentation of your specific systems.
What is the Article 11 template? ▾
Article 11 of the EU AI Act requires technical documentation for every high-risk AI system. Our template covers the 8 mandatory sections: general description, development process, monitoring, risk management, changes, harmonised standards, EU declaration of conformity, and post-market monitoring plan. It is a starting draft — customise with your system-specific information.
Do you store my quiz answers? ▾
Yes, in an encrypted EU database (Cloudflare D1, Frankfurt). Your answers are used to generate your risk report and gap report. You can request deletion at any time — email privacy@governancer.com. See our Privacy Policy.
Can I export my data? ▾
Yes. GDPR data portability — email privacy@governancer.com and we send you a JSON export of everything we hold about you within 30 days.

What if my company has no AI systems yet? ▾
The free quiz gives you a baseline either way. If AI is on the 2026 roadmap, Starter hands you the Article 11 template and deadline alerts now — so the paperwork is done before you switch anything on.
I am a public authority — do I need this? ▾
Public authorities deploying high-risk AI must perform a Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (Article 27) before deployment. Our Pro tier includes the FRIA template and checklist.
